Ahmedabad: A 40-year-old woman from New Ranip has filed a complaint with the Women (West) police, alleging that her husband fraudulently obtained her signature on divorce papers by claiming they were required for his job and later married another woman in Indore while their 17-year-old daughter was present at the ceremony.According to the FIR, the couple entered into a love marriage in 2008 against their families’ wishes and initially lived in Ghatlodia. The complainant, who works with a furniture company in Jagatpur, alleged that after the birth of their daughter in 2009, her husband’s behaviour changed and he frequently assaulted both her and their daughter. She claimed she continued working and financially supported the family despite the alleged abuse.

The woman alleged that in Jan this year, her husband produced divorce papers and asked her to sign them if she wanted to attend her nephew’s wedding. “He told me that if I refused, he would create a scene at the wedding and ruin the function,” the FIR stated.She further alleged that on Feb 6, the day of the wedding, he took her to the sub-registrar’s office and assured her that the documents were required only for official purposes and would later be torn up. “He told me that only a family court can grant divorce, and these papers had no legal value,” the complaint stated. She alleged that she signed the documents after he threatened and assaulted her.According to the complaint, the husband took their daughter to Indore on March 20 without informing her and married another woman at a temple there on March 22. The complainant alleged that he falsely introduced himself as unmarried during the ceremony and told his second wife that the teenager accompanying him was his niece. The FIR states that the daughter witnessed the marriage and disclosed the incident to her mother after returning to Ahmedabad.The complainant further alleged that when she later travelled to Indore and met the second woman, she learnt that the latter was unaware of the existing marriage. She also alleged that her husband later threatened to stop supporting her and their daughter, sell the house, and warned her against approaching the police.
