Hyderabad: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday urged parents to lead by example rather than blame the younger generation, saying many of the challenges confronting children today stem from the behaviour of adults themselves.The RSS chief said today’s generation looks at rulers or authority figures as equals or friends. He noted that questioning authority was not unique to the present generation, saying adolescence had always been associated with a spirit of rebellion. Families, he said, should respond by fostering teamwork and open communication rather than confrontation.Addressing a dialogue on ”Motherhood in the Current Era”, Bhagwat said parents cannot expect children to stay away from social media or mobile phones if they themselves remain glued to them.

“How can we ask younger children not to cling to social media or phones when we ourselves are hooked to them? When we become the right example for them, we can engage in meaningful conversations with them. That is the only solution to the current problems,” he said.Bhagwat said Indian culture revered women as goddesses, but they should also be recognised as individuals. Referring to historical social norms, he said confining women to the kitchen belonged to the past and society should move beyond such practices.He said women, because of their compassion, often help foster dialogue within families, but added that men shared equal responsibility. Even if both parents work, families should make time every few days to sit with their children and talk, he said.Bhagwat suggested that families set aside time every week to share home-cooked meals, wear traditional attire and discuss their culture, traditions and contributions to society.
