Kolkata: Acting on a Zero FIR registered by Shyampur PS in Howrah, Kolkata Police’s Chitpur police station registered a case against former Trinamool Congress spokesperson Riju Dutta, alleging he cheated a retired doctor of Rs 25 lakh in 2014 by promising to secure his daughter’s admission to an MBBS course and later assaulted and threatened him when he sought a refund.The case was registered at Chitpur PS under Sections 318(4), 316(2), 115(2) and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) after the Zero FIR, initially lodged at Shyampur PS on July 18, was transferred to Kolkata as the alleged offence fell within Chitpur cops’ jurisdiction.According to the complaint by Debasish Mandal, 71, a resident of Shyampur in Howrah, Dutta, 45, of Raja Birendra Street in north Kolkata, allegedly collected Rs 25 lakh from him in multiple instalments between June and Oct 2014 after assuring him that his daughter would secure admission to an MBBS course.

Mandal stated that he first met Dutta at MR Bangur Hospital during his service. According to the plaint, Dutta allegedly projected himself as an influential political figure and assured him that his daughter’s admission was guaranteed only if the money was paid.It was alleged that despite repeated requests over the years, the money was never returned after his daughter failed to obtain an MBBS seat. Mandal further alleged that when he visited Dutta’s residence on July 10 for a refund, he was physically assaulted and threatened with dire consequences, including death threats, if he approached the authorities.Dutta, who was suspended from Trinamool after the 2026 election results, denied knowing Mandal and denied taking money from him. “These are false and politically motivated charges,” he said.
