Kalyan: A controversy erupted after KDMC allowed a cricket tournament to be held on a sports ground in Kalyan on Saturday amid a students-led group’s plan for a peaceful protest backed by CJP there the same day. Late on Friday, the tournament’s organiser, Vishal Gaikar, announced that the matches had been postponed following a request from CJP supporters. The protest organisers had earlier claimed they had police’s nod for the stir, but police said their request was neither granted nor rejected. The protest organisers said they had also sought permission from KDMC, which allotted the ground for the cricket tournament reportedly organised by persons linked with BJP.Congress’s Kanchan Kulkarni said KDMC wanted to suppress students’ right to protest. She said her party will support the stir. Sena and BJP hold the majority in KDMC.
