Approach road to Cachar bridge caves in, cuts off border villages

Silchar: Heavy rain washed away an approach road to a bridge in Cachar, disrupting connectivity to several India-Bangladesh border villages.The approach road to Kheruakhal bridge on the Kushiarkul-Natanpur road in western Katigorah collapsed after two days of moderate to heavy rain, rendering the bridge unsafe for vehicles.The bridge is the main link connecting Kushiarkul, Natanpur and adjoining villages with the rest of the district. The damage affected thousands of residents, including students, office-goers, farmers and patients requiring emergency medical care.Traffic came to a halt, disrupting the transport of agricultural produce and access to educational institutions, healthcare facilities and markets. With virtually no alternative route, several villages were partially cut off.Residents alleged that the approach road collapsed after a brief spell of rain, raising concerns about construction quality. Fearing further damage, they urged the Cachar administration and public works department to restore the road immediately and find a permanent solution.
