New Delhi: After Signature Bridge, Delhi govt is planning to construct another cable-stayed bridge between Azadpur and Delhi University’s North Campus as part of an elevated Ring Road corridor to decongest one of the city’s busiest stretches.The 1.8km bridge in north Delhi is expected to be completed by 2030, an official of Public Works Department (PWD) said. It is being planned because of severe space constraints between GTB Nagar and Vishwavidyalaya metro stations. The presence of an underground metro station has ruled out the possibility of constructing an underground tunnel, making a cable-stayed structure the most feasible option, said a senior official.In a cable-stayed bridge, the deck’s weight is supported by tension in diagonal cables directly connected to one or more vertical towers. While the distance between GTB Nagar and Vishwavidyalaya metro stations is around 1km, the proposed bridge will extend for nearly 1.8km through the congested stretch.The project is part of a larger plan to decongest the 23.6km Ring Road section between Azadpur Chowk and DND Flyway. Officials said nearly 46% of the traffic moving on Ring Road passes through this stretch every day, making it one of the most congested areas in the city.The proposal includes a 500-metre bridge across the Yamuna near Metcalf House to improve connectivity towards east Delhi. An elevated U-turn has also been planned for motorists travelling from the Sarai Kale Khan side towards Delhi Secretariat, while another U-turn will facilitate movement from Ring Road towards Outer Ring Road towards Wazirabad.The bridge will be part of the planned 55km elevated Ring Road corridor, which will be taken up in phases — Azadpur Chowk to Metcalf House, Majnu Ka Tila to Salimgarh Fort, and Salimgarh Fort to DND Flyway. Fifteen interchange points have been planned along the entire route, including 10 between Azadpur Chowk and DND Flyway. It also includes 23 access ramps to allow vehicles to enter and exit the elevated corridor, with eight of them planned on the Azadpur-DND section.Officials said the combination of the cable-stayed bridge and access ramps is expected to significantly improve traffic flow around North Campus and the adjoining areas.
