Guwahati: Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi was suspended Thursday after climbing onto his desk during a protest against the flood situation in the state.The Sivasagar legislator sought an adjournment debate on flooding in Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat, which are among the worst-hit districts.“Floods have devastated these three districts. People have lost everything. I urge the House to ask the state govt to request the Centre to declare it a national calamity,” he added.Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass rejected the motion, saying ongoing budget proceedings and cut motions could not be cancelled. He asked Gogoi to raise the issue through another legislative device.As the House resumed business, Gogoi stood on his chair, shouted slogans and climbed onto his desk. Dass suspended him for the rest of the day and ordered marshals to remove him.Congress’s adjournment motion on the floods was also rejected on Wednesday. The crisis has killed 41 people and affected more than seven lakh across Assam.
