Child falls into water tank in Lakhimpur, dies

Guwahati: A nine-year-old boy died after allegedly falling into an under-construction water tank in Assam’s Lakhimpur district on Monday evening, police said.The incident took place at around 4 pm in Narayanpur town. The deceased was identified as Anshuman Saikia, a Class IV student of Narayanpur Balak Middle School.According to police, the child went out in search of his mother when he is suspected to have accidentally fallen into the tank.“The child went out to look for his mother and may have accidentally fallen into the water tank that was under construction in the area,” said Priyanshi Gogoi, second officer-in charge of Narayanpur Police Station.When Anshuman did not return home, his father, Purnananda Saikia, started looking for him. Neighbours later joined the search, and the boy’s body was found inside the tank.Police have registered an unnatural death case and launched an investigation to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident.Local reports suggested that the tank was being constructed under the Jal Jeevan Mission scheme.
