Hyderabad: The Telangana govt has directed the Transport department to step up enforcement across the state, ordering stricter action against overloaded vehicles, tax defaulters and unfit vehicles, including seizure in serious cases. At a review meeting held recently, Transport minister Ponnam Prabhakar instructed authorities to intensify inspections and ensure strict enforcement against vehicles violating transport regulations. He said vehicles operating without valid fitness certificates, those carrying excess loads, and commercial vehicles that had failed to pay quarterly taxes should be targeted through statewide special drives. The minister directed officials to seize vehicles wherever necessary and impose heavy penalties on owners who had defaulted on quarterly tax payments. He also asked the department to strengthen enforcement using the existing workforce, recalling that the govt had promised to bolster enforcement after abolishing interstate check-posts.Prabhakar reviewed the performance of mobile enforcement squads operating across the erstwhile district headquarters since June 8 and asked officials to further improve their effectiveness.Emphasising passenger safety, the minister said violations by sleeper bus operators should not be tolerated and directed officials to take immediate action whenever breaches of safety or transport norms were detected.
