Chandigarh: The MC has received approval to recruit employees for 276 posts through direct recruitment. Punjab governor and UT administrator Gulab Chand Kataria has given principal clearance to the proposal, allowing the civic body to initiate the process. The administration has directed the MC to comply with reservation rules and conduct recruitment through a reputed govt agency. The MC will now finalise the agency to conduct recruitment and issue notice. Earlier, Panjab University had been engaged for similar recruitment.According to MC records, the largest share of posts is for clerks (118), followed by firemen (79), drivers (33), junior engineers (20), and sub-divisional engineers (2). Other positions include five sub-inspectors for the enforcement wing, four draftsmen, four steno typists, and multipurpose health workers. The last major hiring was advertised in 2021 for around 170 permanent posts, a process that took over a year to complete. Since then, no permanent posts have been filled, leaving the corporation dependent on temporary staff. The urgency of the move is underscored by the scale of vacancies. Budget documents recently approved by the MC’s general house revealed that over 60% of sanctioned posts are lying vacant. Out of 5,611 sanctioned positions, 3,767 remain unfilled. Vacancies exist across departments, including engineering, fire, medical office of health, and the directorate. The new recruitment will cover key posts across different levels. These include two sub-divisional engineers (building and road), one sub-divisional engineer (horticulture), five enforcement sub-inspectors, one accountant, 15 junior engineers (public health), two junior engineers (civil), three junior engineers (electrical), and two draftsmen. At the clerical and operational level, 118 clerks, 79 firemen, 33 drivers, and three multipurpose health workers will be recruited.Officials said filling these posts is crucial for strengthening the civic body’s functioning. With thousands of vacancies, service delivery has been under strain.
