JAISALMER: In a major crackdown on narcotics, Sedwa Police in Rajasthan’s Barmer district busted an illegal MD (Mephedrone) drug manufacturing unit on Friday night, around 50 kilometres from the India-Pakistan international border. The synthetic drug was being manufactured inside a residential house.Police seized 920 grams of ready-to-sell MD, 50 kilograms of raw chemicals and powder, more than Rs 24 lakh in cash, suspected to be proceeds from drug trafficking, along with machinery and equipment used to manufacture the narcotic.The accused’s wife was arrested from the spot, while the main accused managed to escape before the police raid. Police are currently interrogating the arrested woman and searching for her absconding husband.Barmer Superintendent of Police Chunaram Jat said Sedwa Police received specific intelligence that illegal narcotic substances were being manufactured in a house located in an isolated field about 500 metres from Gauda village in the Sedwa police station area.Acting on the information, a police team led by Station House Officer Prabhuram raided the house belonging to Mukesh Kumar, a resident of Gauda village. During the search, officers discovered a room behind the house where MD drugs were being manufactured.They recovered chemicals, powder and 920 grams of finished MD ready for distribution.Police also recovered machines used in the manufacturing process, including mixing equipment, along with 50 kilograms of chemicals and raw materials used to prepare the synthetic drug.According to the preliminary investigation, the total value of the seized drugs, chemicals and equipment is estimated to be over Rs 1 crore.The main accused, Mukesh Kumar, fled before the police arrived after apparently receiving advance information about the raid. His wife, Anju, who was present at the house, was detained and later arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team was called to the scene to collect scientific evidence.During the search, police also recovered more than Rs 24 lakh in cash, believed to have been earned through the illegal sale of MD drugs.SHO Prabhuram said a case has been registered under the NDPS Act against the accused, and multiple police teams have been formed to trace the absconding suspect.Investigators are now trying to identify the source of the chemicals used to manufacture the drugs and uncover the distribution network and intended supply destinations of the finished MD.
