Road projects reviewed as Silchar reels under waterlogging

Silchar: A review of key road projects in Cachar on Thursday coincided with fresh flooding across Silchar.Cachar guardian minister Krishnendu Paul chaired the meeting at the district commissioner’s office to review major infrastructure projects and push for completion within the deadline. Minister Kaushik Rai, DC Rahul Kumar Gupta, NHIDCL executive director Nirman Kishan Jambulkar and officials from NHIDCL, PWD, PHE and the district administration attended the meeting.Projects reviewed included the Capital Point-Rangirkhari Road, the Silchar flyover, the ISBT Road, the Birbal Bazar -Silchar Medical College stretch and other ongoing road works. The review came a day after heavy rain inundated several parts of Silchar, disrupting normal life. Knee-deep water was reported at Link Road, Sonai Road, Bilpar, Saratpally, Panchayat Road, Church Road, National Highway Road and Vivekananda Road, affecting homes, shops and govt offices.Residents of Link Road and Sonai Road said main roads, lanes and residential pockets remained underwater throughout the day. The Link Road sub-post office stayed shut after floodwater entered the premises. The flooding renewed criticism of civic infrastructure, with residents asking: “Where are the improved roads? Where is the upgraded drainage system? Why does rainwater continue to remain on the streets for hours after every spell of rain?”Officials said projects were on track, but residents said Silchar’s drainage woes remained unresolved.
