Pune: Three people have been detained in connection with an assault on a 35-year-old shopkeeper with billhooks over a family dispute at Dahanukar Colony, off Karve Road, in Kothrud on Tuesday afternoon.The shopkeeper, a resident of Shashtrinagar, lodged a complaint with the Alankar police against the suspects. The police registered a case of assault against six-seven people and identified some of them.Senior inspector Ulhas Kadam of the Alankar police said, “The shopkeeper sells cellphones and phone accessories. He had previously lodged a complaint against the city gangster, Nilesh Ghaywal, for impersonating last year and buying a SIM card using his identity in 2020. The gangster was using the SIM card in the businessman’s name.”A senior officer of the crime branch confirmed that three people had been detained. “We have not yet ascertained any role of Ghaywal or his gang member in the assault on the shopkeeper,” he said.Senior police inspector Kadam said, “The shopkeeper and his wife had regular fights with each other. A complaint of domestic violence and cruelty was registered against him with the Kothrud police. The shopkeeper’s brother-in-law was annoyed with this. He narrated his sister’s plight to his friends and others, and sent the suspects to the complainant’s cellphone shop.”He said, “The suspects assaulted the shopkeeper with sharp weapons and fled when the latter raised an alarm. CCTV cameras of the shop captured the entire incident.”
