Kolkata: Arnab Basu, a city-born scientist and entrepreneur who built an international technology business in Britain, has hosted the annual Matins service for His Majesty’s Courts of Justice at Durham Cathedral — one of England’s most prestigious civic occasions — in his role as high sheriff of the County Palatine of Durham. The event coincided with the India-UK Comprehensive Economic Partnership and Trade Agreement coming into force on July 15.Basu, also a deputy lieutenant of County Durham, who founded Kromek Industries in Newcastle, said, “The new trade agreement creates opportunities for businesses and professionals in both India and the United Kingdom, but the relationship between our countries has always been about more than trade alone.”He added, “My own life has been shaped by Kolkata and by northeast England. I came to Durham to study, built a business here and have now been given the extraordinary privilege of serving as high sheriff. I hope my experience demonstrates what can be achieved when talent, ideas and opportunity are able to move between our two countries.”
