New Delhi: Supreme Court Tuesday took cognisance of a brutal attack on a lawyer at his residence and sought a probe status report from the area deputy commissioner of police, after SC Bar Association president Vikas Singh accused Delhi Police of attempting to dilute the case by fastening minor charges and not arresting the accused.Singh told a bench led by CJI Surya Kant that the lawyer with 20 years practice was brutally assaulted and when he registered an FIR at Model Town police station, the accused came back, threatened him and demanded he withdraw the FIR.“Police are not arresting the accused despite grievous injuries to the advocate’s head which required 11 stitches. If this is the situation of an SC lawyer in the national capital, what is the guarantee of safety and security of commoners?” Singh asked. When attorney general R Venkataramani supported Singh, the bench enlisted his assistance and asked Delhi Police to file a status report of the ongoing investigation and action taken against accused persons for threatening the lawyer to withdraw the FIR.Posting the case for hearing on July 16, the bench said Delhi Police will ensure that no harm is caused to the life and liberty of the injured lawyer.
