Elderly woman injured in Mira Road apartment fire dies during treatment

Mira Road: A 69-year-old woman who sustained burn injuries in the fire that broke out in a residential building in Mira Road succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment Monday morning. Shakeela Qureshi sustained nearly 25% burn injuries, was also undergoing dialysis, and had multiple underlying health conditions. Her husband, 72-year-old Mustaq Qureshi, continues to be under treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU).The fire erupted around 1.30 am on Friday in the meter box of the seven-storey Aquarius Tower, located in the Govind Nagar area of Mira Road (E). Firefighters rescued 104 residents trapped inside the smoke-filled building.A total of 21 residents, who suffered from burns and smoke inhalation, were admitted to various hospitals. While several of them were discharged after treatment, Shakeela died during treatment on Monday morning. Another resident, 67-year-old Saleem Shaikh, who was seriously injured in the blaze, also remains admitted to the ICU.
