Chennai: Union home minister Amit Shah is set to visit Puducherry by the end of this month to present President’s Colour Medal to Puducherry police for their initiatives to protect law and order.Puducherry SP B Ranganathan said Puducherry police had launched three key initiatives – ‘Makkal Mandram’, Operation ‘Trishul’ and Operation ‘Punnagai’ to improve law and order. Under the ‘Makkal Mandram’ initiative, steps were taken to organise special camps on Saturdays to receive petitions from the public and to seek immediate solutions. Operation ‘Punnagai’ focussed on admitting dropout students in technical education with the help of sponsors to ensure that they don’t land as criminals in the future, while Operaton ‘Trishul’ was for arresting history-sheeters to reduce crime rate. “Under the operation, around 200 history-sheeters and criminals were arrested,” Ranganathan said.Ranganathan said Amit Shah was scheduled to visit Puducherry on July 18, but the tour has been delayed due to the Parliament session, which would commence on July 20.“He is expected to visit Puducherry either on July 26 or 28. The event is scheduled in Gorimedu police ground,” Ranganathan told ToI.Apart from these initiatives, Ranganathan said, under the CCTNS there are 87% e-chargesheets filed and among the UTs, Puducherry has the highest conviction rate.
