Gynaecologist files dowry case against surgeon husband

Rajkot: A 38-year-old gynaecologist filed a police complaint at Nilambaug police station in Bhavnagar against her husband, a 33-year-old joint and spine surgeon, alleging severe domestic violence and dowry harassment. The FIR was registered on Wednesday under BNS Sections 79, 85, 86(a), 86(b) and provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act. According to the FIR, the couple married in Nov 2019 but discord soon began. The gynaecologist alleged that from around April 2020, her husband repeatedly demanded money, luxury items and other financial benefits from her parents. She claimed he developed a liquor habit, subjected her to physical abuse and constantly questioned her fidelity to force her to quit her medical career. The FIR details instances of professional and personal cruelty. The woman stated that her husband verbally abused her for treating Muslim patients at Bajrangdas Bapa Arogyadham, where she was employed, and created scenes when she refused to stop. She also accused him of causing her to undergo a miscarriage, citing an incident in Nov 2024, and of deliberately filing a false complaint under the PCPNDT (Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act) with the collector to damage her career and her parents’ reputation. The couple has a three-year-old son. The woman alleged that her husband failed to provide financial maintenance for her and the child while pressuring her to have another child. She further claimed that he threatened to kill both her and their son and filed a fabricated case in a Bhavnagar court to compel her to return to him. Explaining the delay in reporting the alleged offences, which span from April 2020 to April 2026, the complainant said she tolerated the abuse for years to try and save the marriage. She also cited concern for the social standing of both families, as her father and father-in-law are reputed doctors in Bhavnagar. However, she stated that the continued mental and physical torture eventually forced her to seek legal recourse.
