Kolkata: The KMDA is taking up carriageway and structural repair of seven canal bridges in north Kolkata, including the old Durgapur bridge connecting Ultadanga with VIP Road, where large potholes have developed amid rain, leading to congestion.“The repair of the old Durgapur bridge’s road surface will start at the earliest,” said an official. The work will be carried out mostly at night, when traffic is less, as a lane has to be blocked. The other bridges that will be taken up for maintenance are the Chitpore bridge over Circular canal, the slip bridge at Ultadanga over Kestopur canal connecting VIP Road with Salt Lake, Bagmari bridge over the Circular canal, Maniktala, Chaulpatty bridge over Beleghata canal, Ultadanga steel footbridge over the Beleghata canal and Makaltala steel bridge over Town Head Cut channel. The authorities are in the process of selecting agencies, which, after completion of the work, will monitor the condition of the bridges for regular maintenance and take up repairs on an emergency basis, depending on the situation. “Both patch work and thorough repairs are conducted throughout the year, according to the requirement,” said an official.
