Five education department officials decline promotion in Gujarat
These officials will lose their seniority in comparison with their juniors who accepted promotions

Ahmedabad: In an unusual development, five officials in the Gujarat education department have declined their promotions and requested to return to their previous posts, highlighting a rare case in govt administration where employees typically wait years for advancement.According to official sources, the department granted temporary promotions to several Class-III assistant teachers to Gujarat Education Service Class-II positions between Dec 26, 2025, and June 25, 2026. Following their promotions, the officials also joined their respective higher posts. However, five of these officials later submitted written requests refusing to continue in their promoted roles and sought reversion to their original Class-II cadre. Taking note of proposals from the office of the commissioner of schools, the education department approved their requests. With this decision, the officials will now resume duties in their previous positions as Class-II employees. However, the department has imposed certain administrative and financial conditions as per rules. These officials will lose their seniority in comparison with their juniors who accepted promotions.Additionally, their names will not be considered for future promotions for at least a year from the date of refusal or until a vacancy arises later, whichever is applicable.
