Hyderabad: A month after the southwest monsoon entered Telangana, rainfall remains deficient in 20 of the state’s 33 districts, even as the monsoon covered the entire country on Friday. Data from the Telangana Development Planning Society (TDPS) shows that no district is currently in excess rainfall category. While 13 districts are in the “normal” category, several are only narrowly within range. As per IMD norms, a rainfall departure between -19% and +19% is considered normal. Statewide, Telangana has recorded 158.7 mm of rainfall against the normal of 195.2 mm, a deficit of 19%.Hanumakonda reported the sharpest shortfall at 59%, followed by Medchal-Malkajgiri at 50%. Hyderabad recorded a 29% deficit, while neighbouring Rangareddy fared relatively better with an 8% surplus, placing it in the normal category. Other districts with significant deficits include Nizamabad (-37%), Vikarabad (-33%), Narayanpet (-31%) and Jagtial (-29%).Senior meteorologist YV Rama Rao of TDPS attributed the shortfall to the uneven spread of rainfall activity across the state. “The monsoon has not been uniformly active over Telangana. We are seeing sporadic and localised rainfall episodes, but many districts have missed the widespread and sustained showers needed to bridge the deficit,” he said, adding that the prevailing pattern appears to reflect the impact of El Niño on monsoon behaviour. The IMD, too, has not indicated any major revival in rainfall over the coming days. In its forecast for Hyderabad, IMD said the city is likely to witness a generally cloudy sky with light rain or drizzle in parts, accompanied by strong surface winds. For Telangana, it has forecast only light to moderate rain or thundershowers at isolated places over the next six to seven days, suggesting that no substantial rainfall activity is likely immediately.Weather enthusiast Balaji Tarini said Telangana has entered a “break monsoon” phase. “Mini summer ahead again. From tomorrow, we will be entering severe break monsoon conditions, with hardly any major rains in Telangana till July 15. There may be isolated heat-induced rains but nothing substantial,” he said.
