Gurgaon: A constable was killed and an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) was severely injured after a truck collided with a cattle-laden vehicle on Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway in Nuh district on Thursday.The incident took place during a police operation in the Mohammadpur Ahir police station area under Taoru subdivision after they intercepted the light-duty commercial vehicle (LCV) allegedly being used to transport cattle for slaughter. About 15 to 20 minutes later, the truck travelling from the Manesar side crashed into the stationary vehicle from behind. Constable Girish and ASI Mukesh, who were standing near the vehicle, were hit by the impact.Girish, who came under the rear wheel of the LCV, died on the spot. Mukesh, who sustained serious injuries, was admitted to Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon. Police have launched a manhunt for the truck driver, who abandoned the vehicle and fled.Deputy superintendent of police Prithvi Singh said, “Police registered two FIRs: one against the arrested cattle-smuggling accused — Ranu Singh, a resident of Kanpur Dehat in Uttar Pradesh — and another against the absconding truck driver for the fatal crash.” Girish, a native of Thantri village in Palwal district, who joined Haryana Police around three years ago, is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.Police said a team from Punhana was patrolling near Goyla village around 4am when they received a tip-off about cattle being transported in the LCV. “A blockade was set up on the expressway and the vehicle was intercepted after its tyres were deflated. Van driver Ranu was arrested,” a police officer said.During the search, police rescued 15 cows from the vehicle and seized the van. While the vehicle was parked on the roadside with its parking lights switched on, traffic cones and reflectors were placed to alert passing vehicles. “A policeman was sent to the police station to register the case, while the remaining team stayed at the spot to guard the seized vehicle and the rescued cattle,” the officer added.
