Guwahati: Nearly one in every five new vehicles registered in Assam is now electric, marking a rapid shift in consumer preference over conventional petrol and diesel models.“Over the past three months, Assam has recorded close to 20% EV penetration in new vehicle registrations, reflecting the state’s strong push towards green mobility through improved charging infrastructure, affordable tariffs, reliable power and supportive policies,” chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on X.According to figures shared by the chief minister, electric vehicles accounted for 15.7% of all new vehicle registrations in April, rising to 19.4% in May and 19.6% in June, indicating a steady increase in the adoption of clean mobility.Sarma attributed the growth to the state’s expanding EV charging network, affordable electricity tariffs, reliable power supply and govt policies aimed at encouraging the transition to electric mobility. He added, “This shift, aligned with the nation’s ambitious plan for widespread EV adoption, will lower crude oil imports, improve environmental outcomes & enable middle-class families to save more on their daily expenses. Assam remains steadfast in contributing to larger national goals.”After rebounding strongly in 2023 with a 26.6% surge in new vehicle registrations of all fuel types, Assam’s automobile market has cooled over the past two years. Registrations declined by 3.6% in 2024 and a further 5.4% in 2025, indicating moderation in overall vehicle demand.Even as total registrations eased, the share of electric vehicles has risen steadily, suggesting that consumers are increasingly opting for EVs within a slowing automobile market. The rise in EV adoption forms part of the state’s broader strategy to promote clean energy and reduce emissions from the transport sector.Officials said the long-term objective is to build an ecosystem that supports electric mobility through improved charging infrastructure, dependable power supply and policies that encourage consumers and businesses to shift away from conventional fuel-powered vehicles. The state govt has identified green mobility as a key component of its climate and sustainability agenda, with the chief minister saying the aim is to position Assam as a leader in clean transportation in the northeast while contributing to India’s larger goal of reducing carbon emissions from the transport sector.
