Two Held For Cabbie Death Over Unpaid Loan

New Delhi: More than two weeks after a 30-year-old cab driver died in what appeared to be a road accident in south west Delhi, police apprehended two men after the victim’s family alleged that he was chased, abducted and assaulted before his death. On June 26, Mohammad Ujaib died after his taxi crashed into a concrete electric box near DDA office in New Roshan Pura, Najafgarh. The incident was initially treated as a road accident after police found the damaged taxi with its front-right tyre burst and airbags deployed. However, Ujaib’s family alleged that he was being chased by men allegedly sent by a financier over an unpaid loan. According to them, the chase caused him to lose control of the vehicle and crash. They claimed the injured driver was dragged out of the wrecked car, abducted, assaulted and later dumped near his house where his condition deteriorated, leading to his death.“They assaulted him over unpaid loan of Rs 2.5 lakh and an additional Rs 50,000 that the cab driver had borrowed from them,” a senior cop said. The accused, Sandeep Hooda, a resident of Jhajjar, and Lalit, a resident of Bahadurgarh —both 30 and from Haryana— were arrested.According to the complaint lodged by Ujaib’s younger brother, Zaid, Ujaib had called home around 8am, saying he would reach in five to seven minutes. When he did not return, Zaid called back and another driver answered the phone, informing him that Ujaib had been critically injured. Based on Zaid’s complaint, police registered a case for kidnapping and culpable homicide.
