Ludhiana: A Ludhiana resident has flagged what he termed a serious safety hazard along the busy Amritsar-Delhi railway corridor, alleging that garbage dumping near the Jassian railway bridge is triggering rodent activity that could threaten the structural stability of the track. In a complaint submitted to railway authorities and the municipal corporation on Tuesday, Harpreet Singh claimed that garbage collectors were allegedly dumping waste alongside the railway line, creating an unauthorized dumping site. The accumulated waste, he alleged, has become a breeding ground for rats that are burrowing beneath the track foundation.Singh contended that continuous rodent activity could weaken the soil supporting the railway line, raising concerns about track subsidence and passenger safety on one of the region’s busiest rail routes. He sought an immediate joint inspection by railway and civic authorities, removal of the garbage dump, anti-rodent measures, and a structural safety audit of the track section near Jassian railway bridge. The complainant also demanded a formal inquiry to fix responsibility and initiate action against officials found negligent. An MC official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said garbage collectors operate privately and any unauthorized dumping would be examined. “We will get the matter checked,” the official said.
