Mumbai: Mira Road police have registered a sexual assault FIR against BJP corporator Laxman Jangam from Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation under BNS Section 69, which criminalises sexual relations induced by a false promise of marriage (it does not amount to the offence of rape), even as he filed a cross complaint against the complainant alleging extortion bid. Police said they are investigating both cases and no arrests have been made yet. In her complaint, the woman alleged that in July 2022, Jangam called her to his Mira Road East office and induced her into a physical relationship on the assurance of marriage. She claimed that he “exploited” her at multiple locations, including his office and a lodge, and even threatened her with serious consequences if she approached police or disclosed the matter to anyone. Immediately after the case was registered against him, Jangam filed a cross complaint against the woman, claiming that she had demanded flats, shops, and gold and had even attempted to blackmail him. Police then registered the cross FIR against the woman.
